The haunting images of starving people in Gaza evoke memories of some of the darkest days of our own history as Jews.
But this is not history. It’s happening right now, and we have a moral obligation to act.
Almost 20% of children under the age of five in Gaza City are now suffering from acute malnutrition.
In the first two weeks of July alone, more than 5,000 young children were treated as outpatients for malnutrition, with 18% diagnosed with Severe Acute Malnutrition, the deadliest form of the condition.
Meanwhile, aid seekers are being forced to choose between risking their lives or watching their families starve. Since May 27, over 1,060 people have been killed at aid distribution sites and 7,200 injured while trying to secure food.
Starving civilians is wrong. Using food as a weapon and imposing a total blockade on an entire population amounts to collective punishment and violates the Geneva Conventions.
This is a man-made crisis unfolding in real time. Help push to end this crisis.
Even as the Israeli government has announced that it is taking action to ease the siege, we are also seeing assessments that this might be only a short-term, tactical shift. More pressure is needed to ensure that these levels of hunger will not return.
Five Members of Congress – Representatives Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Jamie Raskin (MD-08), Bill Keating (MA-09), Valerie Foushee (NC-04), and Becca Balint (VT-AL) – are leading a resolution that calls on the Trump Administration to use all available diplomatic tools to: (1) secure the release of the hostages, (2) end the blockade on humanitarian aid for Palestinian civilians, and (3) pursue a durable end to the conflict in Gaza.
