This weekend, ICE arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a Green Card holder and Palestinian leader of protests at Columbia University, claiming his speech had ambiguous “foreign policy consequences” for the United States. President Trump has said clearly: this will be the first of many such arrests.

This is a blatant assault on free speech, civil rights, and the Constitution. It is the playbook of authoritarians, not of a democratic nation. Worse still, the Trump administration is disguising this attack as a fight against antisemitism, exploiting the very real concerns of our community to push an anti-democratic agenda.

We cannot be silent as the law is broken and democracy is eroded in our names. Representatives Jayapal, Raskin and Scanlon are leading a letter demanding answers from the administration about this unconstitutional abuse of power. But they need more support to stop this dangerous precedent.
